The Crew welcomed special guest Parker MacDonald to Crew Stadium on Saturday night through the club's Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Hero program. Part of Parker’s experience was the opportunity to come down onto the field for a post-match meet and greet with starting goalkeeper Matt Lampson.
Prior to the USA vs. Mexico World Cup Qualifier at Crew Stadium on September 10th, MLS WORKS partnered with the Columbus Crew to conduct a Crew Massive Makeover of the Linden Village Green Space Community Garden.
Crew players teamed up with The Ohio Bass Federation and The Military Order of The Purple Heart for the inaugural Casting with the Crew event at O’Shaughnessy Reservoir. With two tickets to the US vs. Mexico World Cup Qualifier on the line, Drew Beckie helped lead his boat to the victory, sending Purple Heart recipient Jacob Tate from Lima to the match. After the weigh in ceremony and the tickets were handed out, the entire group was treated to a great BBQ lunch provided by Kroger.
Crew midfielders Kevan George and Tony Tchani volunteered at Faith Mission Community Kitchen, near Crew Stadium Monday afternoon. The players assisted in serving lunch, as well as preparing future meals for local families in need.
Goalkeeper Matt Lampson, the Spokesperson for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Central Ohio attended both the Summer Heroes Social at the OhioHealth Chiller Ice Rink in Dublin and the Light the Night Kick Off events recently. Matt, a lymphoma survivor, spent these two evenings by visiting with LLS heroes and their families, sharing his story and talking about the importance of being involved with the LLS.
Wil Trapp and Frankie Hejduk recently took the Active Bodies, Active Minds program on the road to over 1,200 Central Ohio YMCA summer campers during their annual Spirit Day. The current and former Crew stars participated in several games with the children, while discussing the importance of exercising and reading every day. After a training session to prepare for Saturday's match against the New York Red Bulls, the Crew hit the links at Pinnacle Golf Club in Grove City for the Crew Soccer Foundation Golf Classic. LPGA pro and fellow Barbasol/Pure Silk team member Natalie Gulbis was the guest of honor, answering fan inquiries in a question-and-answer session and teaching the trade secrets in a short game clinic. Over 120 golfers participated in the event, with proceeds benefitting the Crew Soccer Foundation's Kirk Urso Memorial Fund.
The Urso Fund provides a platform to develop and support youth heart health research and programming to honor Urso's memory. The Crew midfielder passed away suddenly at the age of 22 of an Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy on August 5, 2012.
Frankie Hejduk made a surprise visit to the Tray Lee Center for their end of the summer BBQ on Friday. The children performed a few dances for Frankie before a boys vs. girls pick-up game broke out with the former Columbus Crew captain. The game, after a late goal from the boys in added time, ended in a 3-3 draw.
Crew Players Kyle Hyland, Shawn Sloan and Eric Gehrig spent Monday afternoon with the patients of Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The children were able to play games and create arts and crafts projects with the players during the visit.
