Columbus Crew players Wil Trapp and Josh Williams teamed up this week with Columbus Metropolitan Library branches in Gahanna and Reynoldsburg to read soccer themed books and to talk to children about the importance of reading. The readings come just days before the Crew launches its Get a Kick Out of Reading program that runs during the month of August.
Matt Lampson continued his LLS Hero program through a busy month of July by meeting with many special Heroes and their families. To date, Lampson has honored 18 Heroes at Crew matches.
Continuing the Hero program that Lampson started during the 2013 season, the goalkeeper will work with LLS to invite a child and his or her family to every home and away match during the 2014 season.
Crew rookie defender Ben Sweat made a surprise visit to the Easter Seals Central and Southeast Ohio Summer Day Camp to play games and interact with the campers.
Sweat taught the children a few tricks while working with them to improve their passing and shooting abilities.
Columbus Crew Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter joined members of the Crew front office at the Habitat for Humanity Home of Hope dedication ceremony last week. The ceremony wrapped up a four-month long project that began in March with Crew players and coaching staff.
In partnership with the Columbus Council on World Affairs, the Crew Soccer Foundation coordinated a youth forum titled “The World of Soccer is MASSIVE” on June 20 for 50 high-school-aged youth. The event celebrated this year’s FIFA World Cup and gave participating children a behind-the-scenes look at Crew Stadium, helped the youth explore “global jobs in sports” and work in groups to consider the social, political and cultural dimensions of soccer.
In partnership with Make-A-Wish® Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana, players Chad Barson, Fifi Baiden, Adam Bedell, Eric Gehrig, Ben Speas and Hector Jimenez were joined by wish kids for an afternoon of bowling at Star Lanes Polaris. Eleven wish kids and their families were treated to a VIP experience, complete with private lanes, Crew gift bags, endless pizza and soft drinks. Even Crew Cat got involved in the competitive games.
Make-A-Wish® Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana has granted nearly 13,000 wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions throughout the tri-state area.
Members of the Crew Soccer Academy paid a visit to the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department’s Summer Fun and Adventure Sports Camp. The campers participated in various stations and work alongside Crew Soccer Academy players as they increased their soccer knowledge and abilities.
Members of the Crew Front Office spent last week continuing the work on the Habitat for Humanity-MidOhio: 2014 Home of Hope. Crew players and coaches started the project in March and the work is slated to be completed by the end of July. This project is part of the Dare to Care: Massive Makeover series.
For the first time in Columbus Crew history, the Black & Gold took to the pitch wearing a special military kit featuring custom Crew camouflage numbers this past weekend. These one of a kind match-worn jerseys were autographed by each individual player and auctioned off with proceeds benefitting USO of Central & Southern Ohio and Fisher House of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Bidding took place exclusively online through auctions.thecrew.com and the total amount raised was over $11,000.

Matt Lampson teamed up with the Portland Timbers Saturday evening to help give 10-year-old Brooke a much needed break from her treatment for Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia.
Brooke and her family received tickets to Providence Park from the Timbers front office and then had the opportunity to take to the pitch for a post-match meet and greet with the Crew goalkeeper. Lampson was able to offer advice to Brooke, as well as talk about her love of soccer and the outdoors.
