Stage 1 of the 2012 MLS Re-Entry process takes place on Friday at 3:00 p.m. ET and the second stage of the draft will occur the following Friday, December 14 at the same time. Both stages will take place via teleconference and the Crew will select ninth overall in the drafts.
Here are the rules of player availability during the Re-Entry Process (Literature from MLS Roster Rules in italics):
Players who are at least 23 years old and have a minimum of three years experience in MLS whose options were not exercised by their clubs (available at option salary for 2013).
Current example: Ike Opara's option was not picked up by the San Jose Earthquakes, he is 23 years old and has played in MLS for three seasons. Any team can pick up Opara's option salary for the 2013 season during Stage 1 of the Re-Entry Draft on Friday.
Players who are at least 25 years old with a minimum of four years of MLS experience who are out of contract and whose club does not wish to re-sign them at their previous salary (available for at least their 2012 salary).
Current example: Eric Avila is 25 years old and has played five seasons in MLS. Avila is currently out of contract as Toronto FC has chosen not to re-sign him. Therefore, will be available for selection on Friday. If he is chosen in Stage 1 of the Re-Entry draft, he will be paid at least what he made in 2012 playing with his new team in 2013.
Players who are at least 30 years old with a minimum of eight years of MLS experience who are out of contract and whose club does not wish to re-sign them (available for at least 105% of their 2012 salary).
Current example: Veteran goalkeeper Kevin Hartman is out of contract and not re-signing with FC Dallas. At 38 years old, the all-time MLS leader in games played will be available in Stage 1 of the Re-Entry Draft on Friday. If Hartman is chosen, he will receive a salary increase of five percent with his new club next season.
Players who are not selected in Stage 1 of the Re-Entry Draft will be made available in Stage 2. Clubs selecting players in Stage 2 will negotiate a new salary with the player.
Players who remain unselected after Stage 2 will be available to any MLS club on a first come, first serve basis.
