Gardner selected by Montreal in expansion draft
Major League Soccer today held the 2011 Expansion Draft for the Montreal Impact, which will begin MLS play as a member of the Eastern Conference in 2012. The Impact selected 10 players from among the 272 available, including defender/midfielder Josh Gardner from the Crew.
In his lone season in Columbus, the 29-year-old Gardner scored two goals and added a pair of assists in 22 games (21 starts). He was signed by the Black & Gold on Feb. 21, 2011.
Each current MLS club could protect 11 players from their 2011 roster, and no club could lose more than one player. Ten teams had a player selected from their roster while eight were left untouched.
“While we are disappointed to lose Josh, having a player selected speaks to the quality and depth we have assembled here,” said Crew technical director Brian Bliss. “He’s a good pro and we wish him nothing but the best and continued success in Montreal.”
