Postgame quotes from players and coaches

Crew head coach Robert Warzycha

General impressions on the game

“We played a good game, scored a couple of goals (that were called back) and, you know, we gave up a bad goal and lost.”

On the offensive performance of the Crew

“I think it was good, (Aaron) Schoenfeld was good and (Olman) Vargas was good, we created some chances and we came very close to scoring.”

On the team controlling the game in the back and midfield

“I think, for the most part, we did what we wanted to do, we brought our players forward, especially (Nemanja) Vukovic and we possessed the ball well. The final pass may not have been there but I think that we were getting in the spots that we wanted. Unfortunately we had two disallowed goals, and (Joe) Cannon made two good saves, but we created enough solid chances.”

Crew midfielder Eddie Gaven

Impressions on the game

“I don’t think went our way tonight. We came close on a few balls that I thought were going into net, but they had one cross that ended up in the upper 90 and we lose 1-0. Sometimes that’s just soccer. I thought the team played well overall, I thought we created enough chances to score three or four goals. I we scored one or two goals early that were called back but at the end of the day we still lost. We can’t hang our heads or pout about it. We just need to keep working and try and make it better next game.”

Crew defender Josh Williams

On his goal that was disallowed

“Usually on set pieces I go to the back post and I was able to lose the guy marking me. I knew the ball was going over Chad (Marshall’s) head and I just focused on hitting it hard. I was getting ready to celebrate but unfortunately it got called back.”

On what the team needs to do to turn it around

“We just need to keep playing the way we’re playing. We have to come out and attack first like in the last two games. We played brand of soccer tonight but the ball didn’t bounce our way. We need to keep the spirits high this week in practice and work hard for each other and eventually the results will come our way.”

Crew midfielder Ethan Finlay

On pairing up against Jay DeMerit

“I think it was a good battle. He’s a tough guy, not necessarily known for his speed but very smart. He’s played in the EPL and knows how to deal with different types of guys. He did a good job tonight; it was a good experience for me and a good lesson to learn from.”

On his performance entering at a crucial moment in the game

“I’m a bit disappointed, I think I gave the ball away in a couple of key situations and I wasn’t quite sharp enough in the final third. I think there were some good opportunities created for me and Emilio (Renteria) and we weren’t able to connect with them. It’s a bit frustrating because that was the reason we were put in the game, but you need to go back to the drawing board and figure out what you need to do better and how to get some goals in the back of the net.”

Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie

Overall thoughts

“First of all, it's an excellent result for us on the road a long way from home. It was a very hard working performance. I think tonight was one of the first times this season maybe a couple things bounced our way and went our way. I think early in the game Columbus came out very strong and put us under a lot of pressure. I thought that they continued to do that from time to time in the first half, but I think in the second half, we pressed the ball better in midfield. We defended a little better and we also kept the ball a little bit longer. In the first half, we were giving the ball away too quickly. I think probably the Crew could feel a little bit hard done by tonight. They maybe didn't get all they would've hoped for from the game. But from our point of view, on the road we know we're going to be under pressure. We know we're going to put up with shots and pressure and crosses and things like that. If we can stick together and make a goal no matter how that goal comes, obviously we're delighted with that.”

On the back four and Joe Cannon’s performance

“That's eight games this season in MLS and six clean sheets. That's a fantastic place for us to build from. Joe made a couple of good saves. I thought the fullbacks did a really good job and I thought Bonjour and DeMerit were excellent, but it wasn't just the back four and the pressure all over the field was excellent. Even at the end where the Crew were looking to play forward, we pressed them from the front so they wouldn't have to play back and that limited the number of chances that the Crew got.”

On Lee Young-Pyo's goal

“It was one of those ones where it was fortuitous. We had a set piece lined up that we were looking to play and it got blocked off at the last minute, so you look to get the ball into the danger area and it went right into the top corner. It's fantastic for (Young-Pyo) and fantastic for us tonight. We're just really happy to get a win and keep moving forward”

Whitecaps FC Defender Jay DeMerit

On Whitecaps FC sixth clean sheet

“Away from home, sometimes you've just got to battle and keep battling and keep battling. Sometimes it goes your way and thankfully the guys did that all night. Sometimes goals go in when they're not supposed to and that seems to be what happened on the free kick, but either way it's three points and we'll take it.”

On going into halftime tied at 0-0

“I thought early we had a barrage of chances for (the Crew), so to weather that storm I think for the first ten or fifteen (minutes) was a bit of a break. But after that, it settled down and we really didn't give them too many chances after that. That second half as well, a couple of good crosses they had, but other than that, we dealt with the second balls and did what we had to win.”

Whitecaps FC Defender Lee Young-Pyo

On his game-winning goal

“My goal was lucky. It was a lucky goal for me and for our team. I went to try a strong cross, but it scored. Anyway, we got three points. We won away from home. I am very happy.”

On Whitecaps FC sixth clean sheet

“The most important thing is that we had another clean sheet. Our defense was fantastic today again like last game, so we needed to keep going like this.”
