The Crew went 3-0-2 in league play in May to move to fourth place in the MLS Eastern Conference. Here are the nominees for the Crew Player of the Month for May:

GK Andy Gruenebaum- "The Hebrew Hammer" helped Columbus go undefeated for the month by saving 28 out 32 shots on goal while only allowing three goals during the month. The 'keeper earned Save of the Week honors for Week 11 with his stop of Chris Wondolowski's penalty in San Jose. For his efforts against the Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders FC, and the Chicago Fire, Gruenebaum garnered back-to-back MLS Team of the Week honors for weeks 11 and 12.

M/F Eddie Gaven- The 25-year-old was a key component of the Crew's success in May, playing 90 minutes in each of the Black & Gold's five matches. Gaven finished the month with a goal and an assist, both coming in the Crew's 2-1 victory against Chicago on May 26.

M/F Justin Meram- The second-year forward made his first appearance of the season on May 5 in Portland and week later scored his first career goal as a substitute in Columbus' 2-1 win against FC Dallas. As a starter a week later in San Jose, Meram scored the Crew's lone goal of the match with a beautiful curling shot over the head of 'Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch and in the back of the net. Meram's hot streak continued four days later as he scored his third goal in three games on a header from Dilly Duka's left-footed cross to put the Crew ahead 1-0 against Seattle.

F Emilio Renteria- The Venezuelan put the nail in the coffin in Seattle with his 30-yard volley to beat Sounders' goalkeeper Bryan Meredith and put the Crew ahead 2-0. Renteria's fine form continued against the Chicago Fire as he scored his second goal in as many matches to earn MLS Player of the Week honors for Week 12.

D Josh Williams- In the absence of veterans Chad Marshall and Julius James, Williams anchored a Crew defense that allowed just three goals in May. Williams silenced strikers such as Kris Boyd, Chris Wondolowski, Eddie Johnson, Fredy Montero, and Dominic Oduro in the process of helping Columbus go undefeated for the month.
