Matías Sánchez’s debut in a substitute appearance at Vancouver on Saturday marked the sixth Black & Gold player to make their Crew debut this season. Sánchez joins Ryan Finley, Gláuber, Dominic Oduro, Agustin Viana and Tyson Wahl as new Crew players that have seen action for the club in 2013
Although the Crew wasn’t able to pick up the full six points in the two-game road swing to open the year, the Crew has scored out-scored its opponents, 4-2, in two games this season. Four also represents the number of different players have scored for the Black & Gold (Higuain, Williams, Oduro, Arrieta).
A start on Saturday for Crew ‘keeper Andy Gruenebaum would be his 30th career appearance (29th start) in front of the home crowd at Crew Stadium. Gruenebaum would become the third goalkeeper in club history to make 30 appearances at Crew Stadium, behind William Hesmer (66) and (now San Jose ‘keeper) Jon Busch (46). Gruenebaum’s 29 appearances at Crew Stadium enters Saturday tied Mark Dougherty for third on the club’s list.
The Black & Gold are ranked fifth in MLS in scoring percentage after two games this season. The conversion rate of 14.8 percent (4 goals on 27 shots) through two games sits 6.5 percent higher than Saturday’s opponent, San Jose, who has turned 24 shots into two goals (8.3 percent).
The Crew hosts San Jose on Saturday for the first of four Western Conference fixtures at Crew Stadium in 2013. Last season, the Crew secured points in four of the five home meetings against opponents from the West, posting a 3-1-1 mark in those five games. Overall, the Black & Gold were 4-2-3 in the nine out-of-conference meetings in 2012.
