Starting the first match of his eighth season with the Crew last Saturday against Chivas USA, Eddie Gaven made his 200th regular season appearance for the Black & Gold. The 26-year-old veteran joins Chad Marshall, Mike Clark and Jeff Cunningham as the only players to appear 200 times for Crew in the club’s 18-year history. Since joining the Black & Gold in 2006, Gaven has scored 30 goals and tallied 22 assists in his 200 appearances to help the club to two Supporters’ Shields and the 2008 MLS Cup.

Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum recorded his 15th career shutout last Saturday at Chivas USA. Last season the Black & Gold ‘keeper recorded eight shutouts in his first year as the primary netminder. With 15 clean sheets, Gruenebaum is third on the club’s all-time shutouts list, behind William Hesmer (41) and Jon Busch (25).

The Crew struck first in Saturday’s match at Chivas USA, taking a 1-0 lead on Federico Higuaín’s 51st-minute goal. The Crew went 10-4-2 last season when scoring the first goal and went 5-8-3 in 2012 when their opponent got on the board first.

The Black & Gold suffered 20 fouls in the first match of the season at Chivas USA. The team’s 20 fouls suffered are a league-leading total. Last year, the Crew suffered 20 fouls or more in a game five times, including a season-high 22 fouls twice (April 9 at CHV and May 7 vs. SEA).

2006
The Crew travels to face Vancouver on Saturday for the second of two road matches to open the season. The last time the Crew played two matches on the road to open the season was 2006 when the team went 0-2-0 in a pair of 3-1 losses: April 1 at Kansas City and then April 8 at Colorado.
