Eastern Conference Roundup: July 1
As most teams hit the halfway point of the MLS season in Week 18, the Montreal Impact remain in first place of the Eastern Conference while eight teams have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs at this point in the season.
Here is what the table looks like heading into July.
1. Montreal Impact - 29 pts. - Week 18: 4-3 Loss vs. Colorado Rapids
The Impact suffered its first loss at Stade Saputo in 2013 over the weekend as Tony Cascio's 96th-winner lifted the Colorado Rapids to the 4-3 victory. Montreal will look to rebound as it travels to Toronto on Wednesday before hosting Chivas USA on Sunday this week.
2. New York Red Bulls - 28 pts. - Week 18: 2-0 Win vs. Houston Dynamo
The Red Bulls got back on track by beating the slumping Dynamo, 2-0, at home in Week 18 as Fabian Espíndola and Jonny Steele tallied in the win. New York travels to Colorado on July 4 for an Independence Day clash with the Rapids.
3. Philadelphia Union - 26 pts. - Week 18: 2-2 Draw vs. FC Dallas
The Union's 2-2 draw with FC Dallas ended in turmoil as replays showed Sheanon Williams' clearance of Blas Pérez's shot was clearly over the goal line, yet Philadelphia felt its goalkeeper Zac MacMath was fouled in the sequence that led to Pérez's eventual 97th minute equalizer. The Union hits the road against Real Salt Lake (July 3) and the Houston Dynamo (July 6) this week.
4. Sporting Kansas City - 26 pts. - Week 18: 3-2 Win vs. Columbus Crew
Sporting earned its first win at home since May 5 as it fought off a resilient Crew side to earn the tree points behind a standout performance from winger Kei Kamara. Kansas City hosts Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Wednesday in Week 19.
5. Houston Dynamo - 23 pts. - Week 18: 2-0 Loss at New York Red Bulls
Houston hasn't won since May 8 and Sunday's loss to New York extended its winless streak to seven matches. The Dynamo will hope to get back on track as it hosts the Philadelphia Union on Saturday at BBVA Compass Stadium.
6. New England Revolution - 21 pts. - Week 18: 1-1 Draw at Chivas USA
Chad Barrett's 88th minute equalizer salvaged a road point for the Revolution over the weekend at Chivas USA. The Revs return home to Gillette Stadium on July 6 to face the San Jose Earthquakes.
7. Columbus Crew - 20 pts. - Week 18: 3-2 Loss at Sporting Kansas City
The Crew scored two goals in quick succession to start the second half and it appeared the Black & Gold would leave Sporting Park with a point in tow, but Kei Kamara's second goal of the match in the 80th minute was the gut punch that led to the Crew's defeat. The Crew has a quick turnaround this week with a Thursday match in LA against the Galaxy (10:30 p.m. ET / FOX Sports Ohio) before hosting the Portland Timbers on Sunday (5:00 p.m. ET / FOX Sports Ohio)
8. Chicago Fire - 18 pts. - Week 18: Idle
The Fire had the week off as it prepares for Week 19 home matches against the San Jose Erthquakes and Portland Timbers.
9. Toronto FC - 12 pts. - Week 18: 1-0 Loss vs. Real Salt Lake
Toronto FC didn't looked intimidated by Western Conference leaders Real Salt Lake, but a goal conceded just before halftime was the difference in the Reds' weekend loss. Toronto hosts the Montreal Impact in a Canadian showdown on Wednesday.
10. D.C. United - 9 pts. - Week 18: 1-0 Loss vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC
D.C. United may have played well enough to earn a 0-0 draw, but the controversial, match-winning penalty awarded to Vancouver grabbed the headlines after. D.C. heads West this week for road tilts with Seattle Sounders FC (July 3) and the Colorado Rapids (July 7).
