Black & Gold Bullets: October 7
Unfortunately, the Crew’s winning streak came to an end Saturday night at home against Sporting Kansas City by a final of 1-0. While the loss pushed the Black & Gold back to eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings, they still sit just four points back of Philadelphia for the fifth and final playoff spot. While the team will still need some help along the way to get a chance at the post-season, Andrew King of MLSsoccer.com explains why Bliss’ squad is doing anything but “throwing in the towel.”
Yesterday, LA Galaxy forward and US Men’s National Team star Landon Donovan scored two goals in the Galaxy’s 5-0 win over Chivas USA, tying him with former Crew standout Jeff Cunningham for first on the all-time MLS career scoring list (134). Cunningham appeared in 203 games for the Black & Gold and recorded 64 of his 134 career goals in his eight seasons in Columbus. The Associated Press has more coverage of the milestone and explains why Donovan “would trade most of [his records] for another championship ring.”
Ahead of their upcoming qualifiers against Jamaica (Friday) and Panama (October 15), the U.S. Men’s National Team announced their 20-man roster for their final round of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Familiar faces like Tim Howard, Landon Donovan and Eddie Johnson, who were crucial to the U.S. win against Mexico in Columbus on September 10, headline the list of names to play for the team this month. Franco Panizo of Soccer By Ives has breaks down the roster and assesses who will need to step up with Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey unavailable due to injuries.
