MLS Cup Playoffs and high school soccer lead Monday's headlines

The 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs continued over the weekend as the first leg of the Conference Semifinals got underway. The LA Galaxy defeated Real Salt Lake 1-0, the New York Red Bulls and Houston Dynamo tied 2-2, the New England Revolution dropped Sporting Kansas City 2-1 and the Portland Timbers won on the road in Seattle 2-1. The second leg of those matches resumes upcoming week with goal differential the deciding factor in case of a series tie. This weekend, Crew Stadium will again play host to the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s (OHSAA) State Soccer Tournament. Frank DiRenna of ThisWeekSports.com recaps one of the young teams that will be on display Saturday as Liberty High School’s overtime win over Dublin Coffman sends them to 1 Black & Gold Boulevard where they will play for the Division 1 State Title.

Eddie Gaven’s career in Columbus was a storied one, as he ranks third on the club’s all-time list for minutes, games played and games started while finishing fifth in career goals.
